Officially Receives the CGDC Award 2012 “ENHANCING
SPORT IN DIALOGUE”

The
CGDC Founder and Secretary General, Stamen Stantchev, had the honor to officially deliver the
CGDC Award 2012 “ENHANCING
SPORT IN
DIALOGUE” to Special Olympics Chairman and
CEO Dr. Timothy P. Shriver. The award was granted at the
CGDC Annual Meeting, which took place on May 18, 2012 in Vienna. The
CGDC Vice President, Dr. Walter Schwimmer, proudly handed it over to the Special Olympics representatives at the Awards Ceremony: Mayor Hermann Kröll – President of Special Olympics Austria, Marc Angelini – National Director and Vice President of Special Olympics Austria, Oliver Sodeik – Special Olympics Monaco, and gold medal winners – Special Olympics athletes – Isabella Szele and Christian Hofer. The
CGDC Award was granted to Dr. Shriver in recognition of his remarkable work to promote the universal language of sports amongst people with disabilities; and his impact on the lives of many, creating new programs in athlete leadership, cross-cultural research, health, education and family support.
The handover took place in Graz, after Dr. Shriver signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 to be held in Austria. The world’s largest sports and humanitarian event brings together more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes from 110 nations to compete in 9 Olympic-type winter sports. The Special Olympics World Winter Games return to Austria, the location of the 5th Special Olympics World Winter Games in 1993 in Salzburg and Schladming, the first World Games held outside the United States.
