Anatoly KARPOV for
“ENHANCING INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE”

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Natural Resources, Environment and Ecology Chess Grandmaster and World Champion Anatoly Karpov brings unique intercultural perspectives to his humanitarian work drawing on his experience as a member of the Public Chamber in Russia and his career as a chess world champion. Grandmaster Karpov supports the Chess for Peace Initiative which brings international school students together to learn chess and to build lasting friendships. Mr Karpov has a long history being dedicated to humanitarian causes and holds the positions of UNICEF Ambassador in Europe and President of the International Associations of Peace Foundations.

In addition to helping victims of the Chernobyl disaster as President of the Chernobyl Help Organization, Grandmaster Karpov has also made contributions to the national liberation struggle of the Namibian people. The Soviet Peace Fund led by Grandmaster Karpov financed humanitarian assistance to Namibian refugees.Founders of the CGDC are honoured to present Grandmaster Karpov with the CGDC Award 2012 for

Prof. Muhammad YUNUS for
“ENHANCING SOCIAL BUSINESS DIALOGUE”

Chairman of Yunus Center

Whilst visiting the village of Jobra in Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus was moved by how difficult it was for poor, local people to make a living without having any access to financial services. Having witnessed this problem at close hand, Yunus was inspired to address this inequality by creating micro-loans for the poor.

Yunus went on to found the Grameen Bank, ‘Bank to the Poor’ which reversed conventional banking practices by removing the need for collateral and creating a banking system based on mutual trust instead of exorbitant interest rates. This allowed many unbanked, rural people in Bangladesh to raise loans as they previously had no access to money or collateral. But he did not stop at Grameen Bank and founded more than 50 other companies in Bangladesh to solve social problems, such as healthcare, education, sanitation, water pollution, unemployment, environmental degradation, etc. This concept of social business, which he introduced into the economic framework, is defined as a nondividend company dedicated to solving social problems.

“ENHANCING SPORT IN DIALOGUE”

Timothy P. SHRIVER, Ph.D.
Chairman of the Board and CEO of Special Olympics

As Chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, Dr Shriver has been dedicated for more than 15 years to the fight against the discrimination of those with intellectual disabilities and their participation in the Special Olympics. Dr Shriver has garnered the support of many global leaders to drive the agenda of these athletes and the organisation’s mission. In this capacity, Dr Shriver has achieved the remarkable feat of serving nearly 4 million Special Olympics athletes and their families in 180 countries. He continues to impact the lives of many, creating new programs in athlete leadership, crosscultural research, health, education and family support.

We are honoured to present the CGDC Award 2012 for

“ENHANCING SPORT IN DIALOGUE”

in recognition of the distinguished work to promote the universal language of sports amongst those who are often over-looked due to their disabilities.

The SCORPIONS for
MUSIC FOR DIALOGUE

In line with the CGDC’s vision of encouraging dialogue to create political change, the CGDC is honored to present the award “Music for Dialogue” to “The Scorpions”.

The Center for Global Dialogue and Cooperation – CGDC’s mission is to gather the most influential individuals in the field of politics, business and humanitarian action in order to create dialogue across boundaries, ethnicities, cultures and vocations. Its goal is to generate a powerful “Wind of Change” and find solutions to the most pressing global problems.

The founders and President of the Center for Global Dialogue and Cooperation – CGDC, are honored to nominate The Scorpions for the CGDC Award 2012

“MUSIC FOR DIALOGUE”

for their exceptional contribution to promoting world peace and understanding through music. They hope that the Scorpions’ unstinting pursuit of universal ideals through art will provide a model and an inspiration to all those who take part in the 2nd CGDC Meeting.
Klaus Meine, who will collect the award on behalf of the band, is “The Scorpions” lead singer and writes most of the group’s lyrics. His words to the song “Wind of Change” came to symbolize the re-unification of Germany. In 2005, “Wind of Change” was voted “Song of the Century” by viewers of Germany’s ZDF television channel.

Klaus Meine, who was born in Hannover, joined the Scorpions in 1970 and has since helped make the band one of the most popular rock groups in history. Their music has sold over 100 million recordings.
